In The LIFE: May 1997

by Michael Grabill

Gay Money: Your Personal Guide to Same-Sex Strategies for Financial Security, Strength, and Success, by Per Larson (Dell, $12.95). Over the years a few books have come out with a bit of financial advice for lesbians and gay men. Now, finally, we have a whole book dedicated to us, by a man who knows the business inside and out.

Larson draws on his experience as a corporate consultant, workshop facilitator, chairman of several conferences for "Business Week", co-founder of an organization to advise people with HIV and other life threatening illnesses, and his private practice with over 500 gay men and lesbians, to address the needs we face in the stages of our lives. Focusing on the unique advantages and hidden pitfalls that we encounter in jobs, taxes, insurance, and health care, he takes us from our 20's to our 70's. In each decade we learn what historically the majority of us has been doing wrong, and what we should focus on to create a secure future. You may not agree with all of the statistics, facts, and level-headed advice, but the information given is sure to open your eyes, and get your minds racing.

One area that's bound to cause some controversy is the issue of coming out at the workplace. With so many kinds of work related discrimination, Larson believes that if we are doing what we want to, and earning good money, that our career priorities may take precedence over our political goals. He says work is a "public social life not to be confused with private social life". His advice is to only come out at work if it will bring more value than it costs, otherwise it's irrelevant.

Per Larson is right on the money, and his book counts as one of the investments you should make on the way to a sound, financially fit life. This writer for "In The Life", "The Advocate", and "Victory" will be discussing and signing his book on Friday, June 27, at 7:30pm, at The Painted Word in New Paltz. So whether you are young or old, male or female, mark your calendar for that date. This book may change your life.

Michael Grabill is co-owner of The Painted Word bookstore and coffeebar in New Paltz.
